What is PF registration?

PF registration is the process by which an establishment enrols with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to provide its employees a retirement savings and social security benefit under the EPF & Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952. Once registered, the establishment receives an Establishment Code Number, and each employee gets a Universal Account Number (UAN) linked to their PF account.

Both employer and employee contribute 12% of basic salary plus dearness allowance each month toward the fund, which the employee can withdraw (fully or partially, subject to conditions) on retirement, resignation, or specified events like home purchase or medical emergencies.

Who needs PF registration?

  • Establishments with 20 or more employees - registration is mandatory under the Act.
  • Establishments below 20 employees can opt for voluntary registration to offer PF benefits and attract talent.
  • Factories and specified establishments listed in Schedule I of the Act, regardless of employee count thresholds in some cases.
  • Employees earning basic wages up to ₹15,000/month are mandatorily covered; those above can opt in with employer consent.
  • Once registered, the obligation continues even if headcount later drops below 20 - PF registration, once applicable, doesn't lapse with headcount reduction.

Benefits of PF registration

  1. Statutory compliance - avoids penalties, damages, and prosecution risk under the EPF Act.
  2. Employee retention - PF is a valued long-term benefit that improves hiring and retention.
  3. Tax benefits - employer's PF contribution is a deductible business expense; employee contributions qualify under Section 80C.
  4. Insurance cover - registered employees are automatically covered under the Employees' Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) scheme.
  5. Pension benefit - a portion of employer contribution goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS), building a retirement pension.
  6. Builds credibility with employees, investors, and government tenders that check statutory compliance.
