What is a PAN application?

A PAN application is the process of applying to the Income Tax Department for a Permanent Account Number (PAN) - a unique 10-character alphanumeric code that identifies a taxpayer across all financial and tax transactions in India. It is issued under Section 139A of the Income Tax Act, 1961, and is mandatory for filing income tax returns and for a wide range of high-value financial dealings.

PAN applications are filed using Form 49A for resident Indian individuals, HUFs, companies, and other domestic entities, or Form 49AA for foreign citizens and foreign entities. Applications are submitted online through the Protean eGov Technologies (formerly NSDL) portal or the UTIITSL portal, or offline at designated centres. Individuals who already have an Aadhaar linked to a valid mobile number can also get a free, instant e-PAN through Aadhaar-based e-KYC on the income tax e-filing portal, typically within about 10 minutes - KanoonPe can guide you through this faster route too, where eligible.

Who needs a PAN?

  • Anyone filing an income tax return, or whose income exceeds the basic exemption limit.
  • Businesses of all kinds - companies, LLPs, partnerships, and proprietorships - for tax filings, GST registration, and banking.
  • Individuals opening a bank or demat account, or applying for a credit/debit card.
  • Buyers of immovable property valued above ₹10 lakh, or making other specified high-value transactions (large cash deposits, foreign travel/currency purchases above notified limits, etc.).
  • Non-resident Indians and foreign nationals/entities with taxable income or specified transactions in India (via Form 49AA).
  • Minors, in specific cases - a PAN can be applied for a minor, represented by a parent/guardian, for investments made in the minor's name.

Benefits of holding a PAN

  1. Mandatory for filing income tax returns and claiming refunds.
  2. Enables banking - opening accounts, fixed deposits above notified limits, and loans.
  3. Required for high-value transactions such as property purchases, large cash deposits, and specified investments.
  4. Acts as a universal identity proof accepted across government and financial institutions.
  5. Avoids higher TDS/TCS - quoting PAN prevents deduction at the higher rate that applies when PAN is missing or inoperative.
  6. Builds a traceable financial history, useful for loan approvals and visa applications.

Documents required for PAN application

Identity proof (any one)

  • Aadhaar card, voter ID, passport, or driving license

Address proof (any one)

  • Aadhaar card, utility bill, bank statement, or passport

  • Birth certificate, Aadhaar, passport, or matriculation certificate

Photograph

For businesses

  • Certificate of Incorporation / partnership deed / registration certificate

For foreign applicants (Form 49AA)

  • Passport, PIO/OCI card (if applicable), and overseas address proof

PAN application process (step by step)

  1. Choose the right form. Resident individuals and Indian entities use Form 49A; foreign citizens/entities use Form 49AA.
  2. Fill the application. We prepare your application with accurate personal, address, and identity details.
  3. Upload/attach documents. Identity, address, and date-of-birth proof are attached as per the selected option.
  4. e-KYC / signature verification. For paperless applications, Aadhaar-based e-KYC or e-Sign is used; physical applications need a wet signature/thumb impression.
  5. Pay the fee and submit. The application is submitted on the Protean (NSDL) or UTIITSL portal and an acknowledgement number is generated.
  6. Track and receive PAN. We track the application status; once processed, the e-PAN is emailed and the physical card is dispatched to your address.

PAN application fees in India

Government fees for a PAN application are small (typically in the range of about ₹100 for Indian communication addresses and higher for addresses outside India, plus applicable taxes), but errors in the form are a common reason applications get rejected or delayed.

KanoonPe offers a flat, all-inclusive quote - form preparation, document verification, submission, and status tracking bundled into one transparent number, so there are no surprises later.

Card dispatch2–5 working days
Total (physical PAN)7–15 working days
Instant e-PAN (Aadhaar-based, eligible individuals)~10 minutes

PAN-Aadhaar linking: why it matters

Linking PAN with Aadhaar is now mandatory for most PAN holders. If you missed the applicable linking deadline, your PAN becomes inoperative - which means:

  • You cannot file income tax returns using that PAN until it is reactivated.
  • Higher TDS/TCS applies under Sections 206AA and 206CC, since an inoperative PAN is treated as if PAN were not furnished.
  • Pending refunds and interest on refunds may be affected until the PAN is linked.

If your PAN has become inoperative, KanoonPe can help you complete the linking and reactivation process.
