What is a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is an electronic credential, issued by a licensed Certifying Authority under the Information Technology Act, 2000, that authenticates a person's identity when signing documents digitally. It carries the same legal validity as a handwritten signature for filings made with government portals.

DSCs are issued as encrypted files stored on a FIPS-certified USB crypto token, which plugs into your computer whenever you need to sign a filing. Since 1 January 2021, the CCA discontinued Class 2 certificates - Class 3 is now the only class issued in India, offering a higher assurance level suitable for all regulatory filings, e-tendering, and high-value transactions.

Every director, partner, or authorised signatory who signs statutory filings on behalf of a business typically needs their own DSC.

Types of Digital Signature Certificate

TypeUse case
Signature-only DSCUsed purely to digitally sign documents and forms - MCA/ROC filings, income tax returns, GST filings
Signature + Encryption (Combo) DSCAdds encryption capability - used for e-tendering, GeM portal, and secure document exchange requiring confidentiality

Both types are issued only as Class 3 certificates today, and are available with 1-year, 2-year, or 3-year validity, stored on a USB token.

Who needs a DSC?

  • Company directors and LLP designated partners signing MCA/ROC e-forms (SPICe+, AOC-4, MGT-7, etc.).
  • Business owners and authorised signatories filing GST returns and applications on the GST portal.
  • Taxpayers filing income tax returns and tax audit reports requiring digital signing.
  • Vendors bidding on e-tendering platforms and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
  • Applicants filing trademark, patent, or copyright applications online.
  • Chartered accountants, company secretaries, and other professionals certifying statutory filings.

Benefits of getting a DSC

  1. Legally valid e-signing - equivalent to a handwritten signature under the IT Act, 2000.
  2. Mandatory for MCA/ROC filings - company and LLP e-forms cannot be filed without a director's DSC.
  3. Faster, paperless filing - sign and submit documents instantly without printing or courier.
  4. Enables e-tendering and GeM participation - required to bid on government and PSU tenders.
  5. Secure and tamper-proof - cryptographic signing prevents document alteration after signing.
  6. Reusable across portals - one DSC works for MCA, GST, income tax, and trademark filings.

  • Aadhaar card

DSC issuance process (step by step)

  1. Choose the right DSC type. We confirm whether you need signature-only or combo (signature + encryption), and the validity period (1/2/3 years).
  2. Submit application details. Provide PAN, Aadhaar, photograph, mobile, and email for the application form.
  3. Complete Aadhaar e-KYC. Verify your identity via Aadhaar-based OTP or biometric e-KYC - this is now fully paperless.
  4. Video verification. Complete a short live video call for identity confirmation, as mandated by CCA guidelines.
  5. Certificate generation. The licensed Certifying Authority verifies your e-KYC and generates the Class 3 DSC.
  6. Download to USB token. Your DSC is downloaded onto a FIPS-certified USB crypto token, ready to plug in and sign.

Validity and renewal

A DSC is issued for 1, 2, or 3 years, as chosen at the time of application. It must be renewed before expiry to avoid a break in your ability to sign e-filings - an expired DSC cannot sign documents and must go through fresh e-KYC verification to reissue. We recommend renewing at least 2 weeks before expiry to avoid last-minute filing delays.

Penalties and risks of not having a valid DSC

  • Filings get blocked - MCA, GST, and income tax portals reject e-forms that require a DSC if none is attached or the certificate has expired.
  • Missed statutory deadlines - annual ROC filings, GST returns, and tax audit reports needing digital signature cannot be submitted on time without an active DSC, risking late fees and penalties under the respective Acts.
  • E-tender disqualification - bids submitted without a valid DSC on tendering portals or GeM are rejected outright.
  • Compromised security - using an expired or improperly issued certificate exposes filings to authentication failures and rejection.
